VSCO has released a new set of presets this week. VSCO Film Pack 07 – The Eclectic Films Collection – to me is one of the most versatile packs for straight out of camera. Being from a film past when I primarily only shot film I have had experiences with most of these films. I wish now I could go back and at least share old images and compare those to the digital versions. Anyways, I personally enjoy these presets for more vibrant images. My more muted style and way of shooting doesn’t quite fit however, I found on images in a more vibrant setting or harsh light I LOVED the use of them and what they did to an image to make them pop even more. I typically use only two presets from VSCO but I always enjoy learning what their other presets do because as a photographer I never know what direction my work will take at each shoot or wedding. I don’t like that I have another option but isn’t that what film was too? Having a million options? Certain films will look better with landscapes while others will look better with skin tones.
My favorites from VSCO 07 is Fuji Sensia 100 and Agfa Optima. They work in a vibrant setting and a muted setting, for me and each look absolutely fabulous with skin tones. The black and whites within VSCO 07 are mostly flat and don’t hold much shape to me give or take a few but in film this is also something that occurs with the way a roll of film is pushed or pulled or what chemicals you are using to process your negatives or print. I have printed thousands of black and white prints in the darkroom in the past 15 years and to me they mimic what a darkroom print can look like and what many of mine have. Ilford Pan F 50 is a film is one of my favorites for black and white films and I’m excited to see this in digital form. My personal can’t live without favorite is Ilford HP5 but Ilford Pan F 50 is damn near close. With that said, I’m hoping to incorporate this preset in to my work and now I might just go shoot a roll of it and process it at home because it has been a long time.
Overall, these new presets are cleaner, more vibrant and versatile then the previous collections.
VSCO has provided something great for photographers switching to a digital world. They carry-on the look of film that have long been off the shelves.
All of these photos are one-click with only two having a minor adjustment to exposure.
